Before starting to work at the Empowered Community Learning Center, I knew I wanted to work on something that I was passionate about and that I had wanted to do since I was in my country, El Salvador, which was to work in early childhood education. But like any immigrant can feel when arriving in this country, I felt a little lost and not knowing how or where to start.
I started by enrolling in English classes and classes for the GED high school equivalency, and that’s how I met more people like me, immigrants who wanted to improve themselves academically.
When I was in a class, a classmate and good friend who was already working at ECLC told me that they were hiring assistants. At that time, my son was 4 years old, and I hesitated to go to the interview for the job for two reasons: one, because as a mother I was worried about who would take care of my son while I worked, and the second reason was because I did not have the CDA.
To my surprise and thank God the owner and director Ms. Najwa Dahdah is a woman who works for the community, and for the immigrants, and most importantly she is very comprehensive about the family. She gave me the job and I could bring my son with me to the center, she also helped me with the process of my CDA,which was a very enriching experience and full of learning, in about a year I was in the classroom as a teacher’s assistant with my CDA, working on what I love to do, and being part of the early childhood education of the children in my community.
Having your child development credential is very helpful because it opens up more job opportunities, you can earn more money, and you better understand your role as an early childhood educator. I am very grateful to the program where I learned a lot. I am also grateful to MS, Najwa, she empowered me and motivated me.

Antes de empezar a trabajar en Empowered Community Learning Center, sabía que quería trabajar en algo que me apasionara y que había querido hacer desde que estaba en mi país, El Salvador, que era trabajar en educación infantil temprana.
Pero como cualquier inmigrante puede sentirse al llegar a este país, me sentí un poco perdida y sin saber cómo ni por dónde empezar.
Empecé inscribiéndome en clases de inglés y clases de preparación para el GED equivalencia de high school, y así fue como conocí a más personas como yo, inmigrantes que querían superarse académicamente. Cuando estaba en una clase, una compañera y buena amiga que ya trabajaba en ECLC me dijo que estaban contratando asistentes. En ese momento, mi hijo tenía 4 años, y dudé en ir a la entrevista para el trabajo por dos razones: una, porque como madre me preocupaba quién cuidaría a mi hijo mientras yo trabajaba, y la segunda razón era porque no tenía el CDA. Para mi sorpresa y gracias a Dios la dueña y directora la Sra. Najwa Dahdah es una mujer que trabaja por la comunidad, y por los inmigrantes, y lo más importante es que es muy comprensiva con la familia. Ella me dio el trabajo y la oportunidad de poder llevar a mi hijo conmigo al centro, también me ayudó con el proceso de mi CDA,el cual fue un proceso muy enriquecedor y lleno de aprendizaje, en aproximadamente un año, yo ya estaba en el salón de clases como asistente de maestra con mi CDA, trabajando en lo que amo hacer, y siendo parte de la educación infantil temprana de los niños de mi comunidad. Tener tu credencial de desarrollo infantil es de mucha ayuda porque te abre más oportunidades laborales, puedes ganar más dinero y entiendes mejor tu papel como educadora de la primera infancia. Estoy muy agradecida con el programa en el cual aprendí mucho y con MS, Najwa que siempre me empoderó y me motivó.
